Self-Emptying Base Systems

Nobody puts the bag on the box. Retailers shout about 10,000Pa suction and mop-lifting arms, and they say very little about the sealed paper-and-plastic pouch hiding inside the dock. That pouch is a subscription you never signed up for. Every few weeks it fills, and every few weeks you pay for the next one. The … Read more

The self-emptying base vs manual emptying robot vacuum question comes down to who handles the dirt. A self-emptying base sucks the robot’s small onboard bin into a larger bag or canister in the dock, usually leaving weeks between jobs. A manual robot needs its bin emptied by hand every few runs, or sooner if you … Read more

Here’s the dirty little secret of the robot vacuum world: the robot is rarely the problem. A modern machine gliding across laminate in quiet mode can sit near the level of a quiet library. Then it trundles home, the dock fires up, and a few seconds of dust-sucking thunder rattle the hallway like a tiny … Read more

Picture a big family house on a Sunday. Three bedrooms of crumbs. A hallway that collects mud like it’s being paid for it. A dog shedding with the commitment of a full-time job. You bought a robot vacuum to escape that loop, and now every other morning you’re tipping its tiny bin into the kitchen … Read more

Your dog sheds. Your cat sheds more. And somewhere between the sofa and the skirting board, a tumbleweed of fur is quietly plotting its comeback. A robot vacuum base for pet hair is the unglamorous box that decides whether your robot actually wins that war. The robot’s own bin holds only about a quarter to … Read more

A hot air drying dock robot vacuum fixes the least glamorous problem in home robotics: what happens to a soggy mop pad once the cleaning is done. Leave a wet pad in a closed base station and within days you’ll meet the smell. Add warm, moving air and the pad is dry before the next … Read more

An auto mop-wash dock robot vacuum is a robot hoover-and-mop paired with a base station that rinses the mop pads for you after each run, pumps the grubby water into a sealed tank and, on most models, dries the pads with warm air. The dock does the unglamorous bit of mopping, so you only handle … Read more

Emptying a robot vacuum’s bin is the domestic equivalent of wringing out a teabag. Fiddly, faintly grubby, and somehow needed after every single run. An auto-empty dust bin robot vacuum promises to end the ritual: it parks on a dock, the dock hoovers up the robot’s bin, and you ignore the whole business for weeks. … Read more

There’s a specific kind of dread that comes with hearing the bin-full alarm on your robot vacuum at 11pm on a Sunday. You know the one — that plaintive little beep that means someone (you) has to crouch down, prise open a dusty compartment, and breathe in a small cloud of what your carpet has … Read more

There’s a particular kind of relief that comes from opening a cupboard door and not seeing a robot vacuum’s dustbin sitting there, half-full, waiting for you. That’s the entire promise of a self-emptying robot vacuum base: you get the convenience of automated floor cleaning without the fortnightly ritual of tipping crumbs and pet hair into … Read more
